Famous for the Shroud of Turin, the Fiat Automobile company and the 2006 Winter Olympics, Turin is regarded as the Italian gateway to the Alps.  With particularly cold weather in the winter months, tourists should rug up if they are planning to visit the town at Christmas time when the Christmas markets are in full swing.  Turin has several famous landmarks, including the Mole Antonelliana (now home to the National Museum of Cinema), Palatine Towers (Roman ruins), Turin Cathedral, the Royal Palace of Turin and the Museo Egizio (the largest collection of Egyptian relics outside of Egypt).  Turin is situated in easy driving distance with the French-Italian border (west on the A32/E70), and is also close by to the mountain town of Aosta and the popular foot-hills settlement of Ivrea.  Milan is a few hours away on the A4/A50 motorway, whilst the coastal town of Genoa is also suitable for a day trip.

Turin is serviced by the Aeroporto Internazionale di Torino-Castelle Sandro Pertini (Turin International Airport or Torino-Caselle Airport), situated approximately fifteen kilometres to the north of Turin city centre.  The airport sees over three and a half million passengers annually on flights with British Airways, Ryan Air, Air One and Air Vallee, amongst others.  The airport has two car rental areas, located in the arrivals lounge and within the multilevel car park.  Car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Auto Europa, Maggiore, Sixt, Hertz and Thrifty run out of the airport complex.
